Healthcare UPS · 7 min read · Published 2026-07-17 · Updated 2026-07-17
Hospital UPS sizing must separate critical medical loads from non-critical loads and consider backup time, redundancy, battery type, future expansion and maintenance access.
Start with critical load mapping
List equipment that cannot tolerate interruption, such as diagnostic devices, monitors, lab systems, emergency equipment, IT servers and communication systems. Avoid mixing non-critical comfort loads with critical UPS loads unless the system is designed for it.
Capacity and backup time
UPS capacity is selected in kVA/kW, while backup time depends on battery sizing. A hospital may need different backup durations for life-safety systems, diagnostic equipment, labs and IT.
Design checklist
- Load list by department
- Starting current and power factor
- Required backup minutes
- Redundancy requirement
- Battery room or compact battery arrangement
- Service bypass and maintenance planning
FAQs
Can one central UPS support a hospital?
Yes, but many hospitals use a mix of central UPS and department-level UPS depending on criticality and layout.
Is generator backup enough without UPS?
No. Generators take time to start and may not protect sensitive equipment from interruptions or power quality issues.
